Jack hoisted a bale of hay and hefted it onto the truck, then wiped his forehead with his wrist. The hayfields of Epsilon 23 stretched into the distance, rectangular bales set at uniform spaces as far as he could see. Three hours until sundown, then a meal in the barracks and straight to sleep, only to get up at dawn to do it again. In two weeks, he'd shoulder his knapsack and sign on with a transport, off to find another planet.

Homelessness: his penance for those who'd never again need a home.

Jack stepped forward to the next bale.
